Our vision for this IGERT program is to change the emphasis of graduate education in conservation biology and restoration ecology from a narrow focus on particular basic scientific questions to an applied, multidisciplinary approach. We seek to integrate a variety of scientific disciplines with the economic and social drivers affecting conservation.
By combining applied research with basic theory, integrating community and species level approaches, networking with stewardship professionals and other stakeholders, and being involved in outreach activities, we will produce graduates better prepared to effectively protect and enhance our biological heritage.
The theme of this IGERT is managing and protecting habitat remnants, restoring (or revitalizing) human-altered landscapes, and promoting biodiversity in such areas. Our focus on integrated human-natural landscapes(IHNL) will provide a pragmatic framework for establishing and maintaining habitats to conserve diversity amidst human activities. Our overarching goal is to prepare students for careers in conservation practice and stewardship, thus improving prospects for biodiversity in the United States and globally.
